Thinking about hiking to Choquequirao? Maybe you shouldn’t. Here is why this trek is not for everyone:
1. It is Physically Exhausting
If you prefer a leisurely walk in the park, stay home. The descent into the Apurimac canyon and the climb back up will test your physical limits.
2. There are No Luxury Hotels
You will be sleeping in tents, under the stars, disconnected from Wi-Fi. If you cannot survive without luxury, this is not for you.
3. The Heat is Intense
The microclimate inside the Apurimac canyon gets incredibly hot during the day. You will sweat more than you ever thought possible.
4. Your Knees Will Complain
The endless zig-zag descent to the river is notoriously tough on the knees. Trekking poles are an absolute necessity here.
5. No Cable Cars or Trains
Unlike Machu Picchu, you cannot take a train or a bus to Choquequirao. The only way in is by using your own two feet.
6. You Will Be Disconnected
There is almost zero cell phone reception on the trail. If you need to check Instagram every hour, you will suffer.
7. The Views Will Ruin You
Once you witness a condor soaring over the untouched Inca ruins with no tourists around, standard tourist traps will never satisfy you again.
