Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about visiting Choquequirao.

The Peruvian government is building a cable car system that will make Choquequirao accessible in about 15 minutes. This project is expected to open in 2027. However, the archaeological site itself is already accessible via a 2-day trek from Cachora. We're here to prepare your perfect trip for when the new access opens.

Moderate fitness is recommended for the current trekking routes. You'll walk 6–8 hours per day with significant altitude changes (1,500m descent into the Apurímac Canyon and back up to 3,085m). We recommend at least 2–3 months of cardiovascular training before your trip. Once the cable car opens, minimal fitness will be required.

The dry season runs from April to November, with June through August offering the most stable weather but also the coldest nights (temperatures can drop below freezing). April–May and September–October offer a nice balance of good weather and warmer temperatures. We recommend avoiding December–March due to heavy rain.

Yes, altitude can affect some travelers. Cusco is at 3,400m and Choquequirao sits at 3,085m. We strongly recommend 2–3 days of acclimatization in Cusco before starting. Our guides carry emergency oxygen and first-aid equipment. Drinking coca tea, staying hydrated, and ascending gradually are the best preventive measures.

Simply fill out the contact form above and select "Early Access / Waitlist for Future Tours" as the subject. You can also check the newsletter box to receive updates about opening dates, exclusive early-bird pricing, and travel tips. We'll be the first to let you know when bookings open!

Choquequirao is larger than Machu Picchu (1,800 vs 530 hectares), receives fewer than 30 visitors per day (vs 1.5 million/year), and only 30% has been excavated — meaning massive discoveries still await. It features unique llama terraces found nowhere else in the Inca world. Think of it as experiencing Machu Picchu before the world found out.
