The History of the Last Inca Stronghold

Often called the «sacred sister» of Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is a marvel of Inca engineering. But its history is much more rebellious.

1. Built by Topa Inca Yupanqui

Constructed during the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it was likely an administrative hub and ceremonial center.

2. Manco Inca’s Retreat

After the fall of Cusco, Manco Inca retreated to the Vilcabamba region. Choquequirao served as the last bastion of resistance against the Spanish conquistadors.

3. The Llama Terraces

One of the most unique features of Choquequirao is the Sector VIII, where 24 llamas are intricately carved into the stone terraces using white quartz.

4. Still Mostly Undiscovered

Archaeologists estimate that only 30% to 40% of the city has been excavated. The rest is still swallowed by the dense cloud forest.
