This epic 8-day expedition covers approximately 74 kilometers (45 miles) across some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Andes, connecting the "sacred sister" of Choquequirao with the legendary Machu Picchu. Because the steep descents into the canyons can be just as demanding as the ascents, this trek requires a strong level of physical preparation.
Itinerary
Day 1
Cusco – Cachora – Santa Rosa
Start Time: 4:00 AM
Distance: 10 km (Approx. 6 hours)
Our adventure begins with a 4-hour scenic drive to the village of Cachora (2,950m / 10,005ft). From the edge of the Apurimac Canyon, we commence our hike downwards, experiencing a dramatic shift in temperature and vegetation. We hike all the way down to the river crossing at Playa Rosalina (1,530m) before tackling a tough ascent to our first campsite at Santa Rosa (1,890m). The canyon heat makes this initial climb quite demanding, but the sweeping views are a spectacular reward.
Day 2
Santa Rosa – Marampata – Choquequirao
Start Time: 5:00 AM
Distance: 16 km (Approx. 8 hours)
Prepare for a strenuous morning as we conquer the steep zig-zag trail climbing up to Marampata (3,150m). From here, the terrain levels out as we transition into a beautiful cloud forest leading directly to the magnificent Choquequirao archaeological site. We will camp right next to the ruins (3,033m), giving you time in the afternoon to relax, enjoy the mountain panoramas, and take your first guided stroll through the ancient citadel.
Day 3
Choquequirao – Pinchaunuyoc – Maizal
Start Time: 5:00 AM
Distance: 18 km (Approx. 8 hours)
We dedicate the early morning to thoroughly exploring the vast and mysterious sectors of Choquequirao. Afterward, we cross the Choquequirao pass and begin a steep descent to the terraced ruins of Pinchaunuyoc, plunging further down to the Rio Blanco (1,990m) for lunch. The afternoon brings a relentless uphill climb out of the canyon until we reach our peaceful campsite at Maizal.
Day 4
Maizal – Qoriwayrachina Pass – Yanama
Start Time: 5:00 AM
Distance: 18 km (Approx. 8 hours)
Our trail winds upwards past ancient silver mines, traversing a lush landscape teeming with birdlife and exotic flora. Following a grueling 5-hour ascent, we conquer the Qoriwayrachina pass at an impressive 4,145m (13,599ft). Following a well-deserved lunch, we descend into the remote Andean valley of Yanama, where we set up camp and rest our legs for the next day's challenge.
Day 5
Yanama – Qelcamachay
Start Time: 5:00 AM
Distance: 16 km (Approx. 7 hours)
Today we journey into the most isolated and untouched segments of the expedition. The morning hike is a relatively gentle approach through the valley. By the afternoon, the incline steepens as we trek along remnants of authentic original Inca trails for about 4 hours, finally arriving at our high-altitude campsite at Qelcamachay (4,150m).
Day 6
Qelcamachay – Choquetacarpo Pass – Vitcos
Start Time: 5:00 AM
Distance: 10 km (Approx. 5 hours)
We push for the final summit of our trek, navigating the rugged ascent to the Choquetacarpo pass (4,600m / 15,090ft)—the highest point of the journey. From this freezing but breathtaking vantage point, we begin our long descent into the Vilcabamba region, setting up camp near the historic ruins of Vitcos and Rosaspata, the final strongholds of the Inca resistance.
Day 7
Vitcos & Rosaspata – Aguas Calientes
Start Time: 7:00 AM
We spend a relaxed morning enjoying a guided historical tour of Vitcos, Rosaspata, and the carved ceremonial rock of Ñusta Hispana. Following lunch, we board private transport for a 4-hour drive to Hidroelectrica. From there, we catch the train to Aguas Calientes, checking into a comfortable 3-star hotel. You'll finally enjoy a hot shower and a celebratory dinner in town!
Day 8
Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco
Start Time: 5:00 AM
The grand finale! We take an early bus up the zig-zag road to the gates of Machu Picchu, aiming to witness the morning light hitting the ruins. Your guide will provide a comprehensive 2-hour walking tour of the citadel. Afterward, you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, where our private transport will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Cusco.
